Human-in-the-loop is a design in which an AI workflow pauses at defined points so a person can approve, correct or reject what the AI proposes before it takes effect.
Also called: HITL, human oversight, human approval
It is the most effective single control for AI automation in regulated or customer-facing work: the model does the reading and drafting, a named person keeps the authority and the accountability.
Good implementations make the approval a first-class step in the workflow, show the reviewer the evidence the AI used, and record the decision in the audit trail.
