Agentic AI describes AI systems that act with a degree of autonomy — planning steps, using tools and adapting to results — rather than only generating a single response.
Also called: agentic workflows, agentic automation
The word marks a shift from AI that answers to AI that does. An agentic system decides which step comes next based on what it has learned so far, which makes it far more capable on messy, real-world tasks — and harder to predict.
For enterprises the practical question is how much autonomy to grant. Most production deployments use bounded autonomy: the agent may read and draft freely, but consequential actions pass a guardrail and a human approver, and every step is logged.
