Governed business definitions — datasets, dimensions with hierarchies, measures, calculated members, joins, filters and parameters — shared across the installation or kept in a project, certified by data stewards, queried with Try a query, and used by Ask Greg. The semantic layer is where a business figure is defined once, by name, so that everyone who asks for it gets the same number. Instead of each person writing their own total over an invoice table, someone defines Revenue as a MEASURE — which dataset, which expression, which aggregation, and what it means in plain language — and everything that asks for Revenue uses that definition. Definitions are kept in Settings → Semantic objects. Use the layer for figures that more than one person reports, that will be compared across reports, or that Ask Greg should compute the agreed way: revenue, margin, headcount, exposure.
